The Northern Regional Jail is located in Moundsville, West Virginia, and is one of ten regional jails that will ultimately be built in the State of West Virginia. This facility, which opened in October 1994, is one of the only facilities in the country that houses both a regional jail and a prison. Two of the four pods at Northern Regional Jail house pre-trial and misdemeanant jail inmates; and two pods, operated by the Division of Corrections, house convicted felons. Each pod houses approximately a hundred inmates. The jail serves five counties which include Brooke, Hancock, Marshall, Ohio, and Wetzel.
The Northern Regional Jail has a medical unit which is operated 24 hours a day, a gymnasium, dining facility, a classroom with a full-time teacher, a newly computerized booking area, counseling staff, a law library, and much more. The facility is staffed with fifty uniformed correctional officers and approximately seventeen non-uniformed support personnel. The regional jail operations within the facility function on a military rank structure and are directed by an Administrator, a Chief Correctional Officer, and a 1st Sergeant.
