The Middle River Regional Jail is a high security facility which opened in 2006 and is operated by the jurisdictions of the cities of Waynesboro and Staunton, and the counties of Augusta and Highland, under the authority of the State of Virginia. The Middle River Regional Jail holds a maximum capacity of 902 male and female inmates, state inmates of all custody levels who are probation violators, awaiting trial, sentencing, or transfer to the Virginia Department of Corrections system or the Federal Bureau of Prisons system.
